Q. When will I know that I have the LPS Directing deal down?
A. When you direct a scene and suddenly your swept into a moment that takes your breath away. Then one of the actors stops and looks at you and they tell you, they felt like they weren't acting at all, or they stop and tell you it just feels different and it must really suck bad. When this happens again and again and you keep guiding the actors to not stop and you are able to get them back to those magic moments almost immediately you will know you have it down.
Q. Who will we direct?
A. Each other in the form of table reading then we will be getting on our feet.
Q. Keith come on for free? What is the catch?
A. This is the business of entertainment and I need to clone this work. or it will stagnate and die. Need directors and actors who believe it is different, successful and effective. Unless we are able to carry the LPS work forward it dies.
Q. Carry "it" forward? What do you mean?
A. I believe the LPS work is unique and amazing when it clicks. However, when it’s just me how far can it truly go and grow?
(The big picture is to have selected actors & directors who can grasp the LPS perspective and would then be liscense. or certified or recognized in some way, to indicate they have learned specific tools and skills to create / duplicate the LPS work / process. Actors & directors who understand the power of "flow" and "blink" and how combined these tools can deliver effortless instant "truth" a cleaner, clearer compelling performance. To give an actor the power to succeed in an accent they can barely remember, or to recreate an in-depth multi-layered character in the moment. )
Q. So what is the objective of directing this way?
A. To direct and guide the actor without the angst of the method or the repetition of Meisner creating characters layered in levels that would typically take weeks of rehearsal time to develop. More importantly as a director to provide you with the skills to remove the veneer most actors hide there best work behind and gently peel those petals of protection away safely and with respect.
Q. So we do all this yippee! Now what?
A. Eventually think we can take the LPS to LA and NY., Use the LPS work to build a theater and film production company in Chicago that can pay actors and directors for their talents. While at the same time producing new world premier plays, screenplays and films.
(I could tell you all the rest but it’s not about the big what if picture. It’s about what we do today to move toward that goal. More importantly I can’t accomplish any of these objectives / goals alone.)
Q. Will I have to sign the NDA (non-disclosure thing)
A. Some days I think yes some days no, right now I am not sure,
Q. Ok, Ok your killing how long will this all take I got to work, eat, I need to audition, perform and I kinda need downtime too.
A. I know so do I. Here is what I promise. I will know the duration when I can see / feel or hear where you all are as a directing unit. Richard Dennis trained the turtles in 2 weeks 8 hours a day. Do we need that much time? As much as I would like to say yes. I don't think so - I promise I will provide a game plan after the first meeting. (thinking we try a starbux in the city or local coffee joint)
Q. Ok last one, what makes you the authority in this stuff.
A. Tough one, Not sure how to answer without sounding like some kinda pompous jerk. I love this stuff and for a lot of reasons some aspects of the "work" are not at my disposal any more. That black hole, those parts missing in me is something that I took for granted for years. Now I don't know if that emptiness will stay fixed or cause more damage. Either way I don't want to wait to find out.
Will I be wrong? Yep. Make mistakes? Only too often. Will I sacrifice years of work and study, the respect and love of my family, friends, my fellow actors in this craft for something other then the truth in this style of acting work? God I hope not.
